I hope this message finds you well. I’m writing to share some exciting news: Recently, teachers from High Tech Middle School in San Diego, enlisted the help of their 7th-grade students to author a book for young readers that shares the personal forgiveness journeys of several TKF family members, including myself.
These students conducted interviews, helped with editing, and even wrote the preface of this compelling book, Victims on Both Ends of the Gun. For the first time since my release from prison, I was able to share my personal journey leading up to the tragic night that I took Tariq’s life. It was difficult for me to re-visit this, as I recalled the tremendous pain that my senseless action caused. For the past several years, I have dedicated my life to helping young people choose peaceful choices in their own lives, and I do it in Tariq’s name and memory.
In the process of creating this book, the High Tech teachers used the collaborative writing process to help students safely explore powerful emotions, complex social issues, and ways to inspire peace. I wish resources like this had been available when I was young. The students were so invested in this project that they came in during lunchtime and even after school to see the book to completion. And, they were determined to tell the TKF story in a way that honors the journey of each person involved.
To honor the book’s launch and its numerous authors, TKF is hosting a special commemorative event, that we think you might be interested in attending. My grandfather Ples, as well as Azim, Tasreen and I will host an interactive roundtable forum to celebrate the book’s publishing. Together we will share our experiences and engage with you in thoughtful dialogue about the power of restorative justice and forgiveness.
We would love for you to join us.
In Peace,
Tony Hicks
